My Review of ‘Prince of Persia – The Sands of Time’

This movie, based on the video game going by the same name, can be termed as a decent adaptation, with some major changes in the story.

Prince of Persia

The story revolves around an ancient dagger which gives the possessor the ability to travel in time whenever they press a joystick like button on the dagger.

The plot is ridiculously simple unlike the plot of the video game series. The story has nothing more than Prince Dastan joining Princess Tamina to rescue the Dagger and the Sands of Time from his treacherous uncle Nizam.

Gyllenhaal has the looks of a prince and portrays the character well. He surely should have been given more action sequences to prove his mettle. Alfred Molina as the opportunistic ostrich-race organizer is quite impressive. Ben Kingsley as the wicked uncle Nizam is pretty ordinary. Gemma Arterton looks charming and gorgeous.

Considering that this was a high-budget movie, I expected much more impressive action sequences. There is never a flow in all those action sequences and we are never given a chance to see the prince flexing his muscles in an impressive stunt sequence. Even the sword sequence was shown just for a short span of time. Its meant to be an adventure film, but if feels like all the action has been squeezed out of the movie. :(

My Opinion – Not Awful. It entertains. Could have been better.

A R Rahman

The name needs no introduction. From humble beginnings in Chennai, this man now rules the music empire. He made the world listen to Indian music. Even though he is a quiet guy he commands respect from musicians and music lovers. He has great technical expertise. He knows what his fans expect and connects well with all his audience. His music has changed the face of music in India. He is a guy who keeps changing well with time and brings out the best.

Well, for a music freak like me ARR is the Lord. Even after listening to his creation innumerable number of times one would never get tired. It is a magical experience. It boosts the spirits of everyone.

Many say “What’s life without music?”. Even I agree with that but I would like to add – “What’s music without ARR?” This was proved at our cultural fest, Festember too. Most of the events had the participants either singing ARR hits or dancing to his tunes. Pro Nite was an event which saw two prominent personalities, Drummer Sivamani and Singer Karthik performing at NIT Trichy. The 1hr long solo concert by Sivamani had him performing to various evergreen tunes of ARR. It was a truly interactive experience with his playing dexterity shining through. Even the next concert by singer Karthik had him singing from the diverse collection of ARR Hits. Truly, music is nothing without ARR.

Poi Solla Porom

Saw this movie yesterday…. It is a pleasant and charming movie. Selection of actors was the major plus for the movie. Each actor portrays his character in the best possible manner. Nedumudi Venu as the Victim, Om as Vicha, Karthik as Uppuli, Mouli as a drama artist, Nasser as the land shark, or Balaji and John Vijay(Son of Gun in Oram Po) as the PAs all are perfect for the roles.
The movie also emphasizes on the illegal land business going on in our society and how common people react to it. The good thing is that all these are done in a humor filled story and not like a story where the hero goes fighting the villains one-on-one.

Read the review of the movie at my Brother’s Blog. My verdict is that the movie is fun and is good for killing time.

Tamil Remix of the Year – 2007

2007 saw a lot of Remixes of old Tamil hits. Starting of the trend this year was Vasantha Mullai from Pokkiri. Then came remixes like Yeh Aatha in Malaikottai, Pon Magal in Azhagiya Tamil Magan, Engeyum Eppothum in Pollathavan, Andru Vanthathum in Kannamoochi Enadaa. The remake of 1980 classic Billa in 2007 had remix of two of the songs from the original – My name is Billa and Vethalaiya Pottendi.

“”The Verdict”"
My ranking of these remixes would be:

7. Andru Vanthathum – Ranked last coz of the blunder Yuvan had done in remixing this song.

6. Yeh Aatha – A lot of energy has been added to the song to make it great and entertaining.

5. Vethalaiya Pottendi - Shankar Mahadevan’s voice rocks.

4. My name is Billa – The original with some rap and guitar interludes.

3. Engeyum Eppothum – Yogi B has given the song a new feel. SPB is great in the song.

2. Vasantha Mullai – The tune of the original is maintained but lyrics of this song had been changed to suit the movie.

1. Pon Magal Vanthaal – A.R.Rahman’s magic has worked yet again. Though the song is just for about 3 mins, it has been mixed well and presented well.

Billa

The name immediately brings to our mind the smart Rajnikanth in the movie Billa released in 1980.. It was a film that made Rajni a mass action hero. It was his first double role. It was a roaring success.

Now the same movie has been remade with Ajith as the hero. As the stills n promos of the movie say it promises to be an stylish and entertaining movie. The songs of this movie are by Yuvan. Two of the songs in the original movie – ‘My name is Billa’ and ‘Vethalaiya Pottendi’ have been retained in the new one. The songs of this movie are cool. Lets hope that Ajith keeps up the style of the original movie.

ATM

ATM- Azhagiya Tamil Magan or Azhugiya Tamil Movie?!?!?!?

This could easily be the worst movie of the year … The movie had “nothing” except for the great ARR’s Music(which has been terribly wasted in the movie).
Having heard the music of ATM and reading the review given in “The Hindu” , I had a interest in watching this movie… Even though I was warned before, I saw this movie expecting atleast a few good scenes… There were none…

Cast : Good Vijay, Bad Vijay(lolz!!!), one dumb n idiotic Shriya,

NOT DECENT ENOUGH TO WRITE A REVIEW ON…!

Such directors should be banned from directing any movies…. especially directors like this guy n Perarasu should be…
